Position Summary:
The Tribunal is an ecclesiastical (Church) court which concerns itself with judicial matters according to the Code of Canon Law.
The Tribunal Transcriptionist is responsible for accurately transcribing audio recordings and handwritten documents related to canonical cases, including marriage nullity processes. The individual must maintain strict confidentiality and ensure faithful adherence to Canon Law terminology and the tone appropriate for ecclesiastical proceedings.
Principal Duties
• Transcribe audio recordings of depositions, interviews, and other tribunal sessions verbatim.
• Format transcripts according to Tribunal standards and canonical requirements.
• Edit and proofread documents for grammatical accuracy while preserving original meaning.
• Maintain confidentiality of all case materials and adhere to diocesan data security protocols.
• Organize and file electronic transcripts in accordance with diocesan recordkeeping policies.
• Communicate with tribunal staff and clergy to clarify unclear audio or handwritten text as needed.
• Ensure timely completion of transcription assignments to support tribunal timelines.

• While performing the duties of this job, required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weight of 10 - 50 pounds
• Requires good hand-eye coordination; arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp; and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read
• Frequently required to sit, hear, talk and use repetitive motion of the hands/wrists
• Occasional evening and/or weekend work is required
• Work performed in an individual, well-lighted office. The noise level is usually low. The space is wheel chair-accessible
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge/Skills: Minimum 2 years of transcription experience, preferably in legal, medical, or ecclesiastical settings; Proficiency with transcription software, Microsoft Word, and digital audio tools; Excellent listening skills and attention to detail; Strong grammar, spelling, and editing skills.
Familiarity with Catholic Church structure, Canon Law terms, and tribunal processes preferred. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
• Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or relevant certification preferred.
