Job Description

Second to Fourth Year Apprentice Lineman Opening - Linden

The Second to Fourth Year Apprentice Lineman is a position with Tipmont that follows a career trajectory toward Journeyman Lineman. This specific position requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a designated Apprentice Lineman.

To progress to the Journeyman Lineman level for further training, an individual must demonstrate competencies through assessment and / or job evaluation.

Groundman Skills

  • Observe lineman work.  
  • Perform manual labor tasks at work sites as assigned by the crew foreman, including but not limited to:  
    • Loading / unloading supplies and material.  
    • Cutting brush.  
    • Digging ditches.  
    • Assisting in the proper use and care of tools and equipment.  
    • Reporting malfunctioning / broken equipment to a foreman or supervisor.  
    • Assisting in the preparation of material for linemen to install.  
  • Demonstrate aptitude and ability for effective and efficient work.  
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of lineman skills learned across a minimum of two years.

     

Construction and Maintenance

  • Plan preparations for timely, thorough completion of assigned daily work by reviewing staking sheets, work orders, maps and other related paperwork.  
  • Gain knowledge necessary to perform all phases of line work, including construction.  

Training and Observation

  • Maintain progress on a planned schedule of training and experience toward the designation of Journeyman Lineman.  
  • Attend a training program of the cooperative’s choice, with increasingly challenging assignments to gain necessary skills and knowledge.

     

Safety and Compliance

  • Participate in thorough tailgate job-briefing conference prior to beginning projects to ensure safe, efficient and timely completion of work.  
  • Work in compliance with established federal and state regulations, Rural Utilities Service guidelines, the National Electrical Safety Code, and electric cooperative designing and staking specifications regarding standards, codes, safety rules, and general operating procedures.  
  • Set an example of safe practices for others by example of individual work practices.  

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.  
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a designated Apprentice Lineman.  
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform duties required, which include:  
    • Climbing poles.  
    • Lifting, carrying or pushing with force weights of up to 100 pounds.  
    • Assisting in construction of lines when required.  
  • Valid driver’s license and / or the ability to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).  
  • Ability to listen carefully to colleagues and cooperative members.  
  • Ability to learn and understand the cooperative’s service area, transmission and distribution systems.  
  • Ability to use or learn to use a personal computer / tablet for various applications, including Word, Excel and database programs.  
  • Ability to use all types of office equipment (e.g., copier, fax machine, telephone).  
  • Ability to operate an automobile.  
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.  
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language above the level of the average adult.
